Printing Press Operator



Job Title:                   Press Operator

Job Location:          Kiel, Wisconsin

Position Type:         Full-Time/Regular


The Press Operator is in charge of running the entire press system, takes full responsibility for printed product, must have sufficient knowledge of every component of all printing presses, provide a safe working environment to ensure continuous effective operations, while following and supporting the policies, goals and objectives of Wind Walker Label.

Areas of Responsibility

  1. Pre-production (in coordination with Kitter)
    1. Locate required plates (if required)
    2. Locate required substrates and overlaminates (if required).
    3. Locate required inks (if required).
    4. Locate required dyes (if required).
    5. Mount plates (if required).
    6. Mount substrate onto press (if required).
  2. Set-up
    1. Web press.
    2. If necessary, mix inks.
    3. Pour inks into designated ink fountains.
    4. Install mounted plates into designated stations.
    5. Install dies into designated stations.
    6. Adjust registration of all colors until acceptable.
    7. Check and adjust colors as needed.
    8. Check die cut for registration and depth, adjust as needed.
    9. Perform any required quality checks (color, UPC code, etc.).
  3. Production run
    1. Examines job order to determine quantity to be printed, stock specifications, colors and special printing instructions.
    2. Monitor quality on a continuous basis—color, registration, die cut, etc.
    3. Perform in-process quality checks as specified (UPC quality, die cut depth, etc.).
    4. Produce job to established quality and productivity standards.
    5. Reacts quickly to make fast adjustment in order to minimize waste and downtime.
    6. Notify manager of any material or machine issues.
    7. Examines job order to determine quantity to be printed, stock specifications, colors and special printing instructions.
  4. Post-production
    1. Drain ink from ink fountains.
    2. Clean ink fountains with specified chemicals.
    3. Return inks to appropriate areas.
    4. Remove substrate from press.
    5. Return substrate to Returned Material Area.
    6. Return die to designated area.
    7. Remove plates from cylinders.
    8. Return plates to specified location.
  5. Organizes the work area to maintain a safe and clean environment.
  6. Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested or required.

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of terminology, job flow, job tickets and the quality standards for the Press area.
  • Self-motivated, organized, detail oriented, mechanically inclined and good hand-to-eye coordination.
  • Basic math ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) plus computer skills.
  • Ability to read a ruler and scale.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders and specifications/blueprints.
  • Understand quality standards and produce work to quality standards with appreciation for detail, design and color matching.
  • Ability to produce quality work within company productivity standards.
  • Willingness to keep up with developments and changes in printing technology.
  • Good color vision and ability to be trained to use color measurement instrumentation.
  • Good problem solving and communication skills.
  • Ability to stand for 8-10 hours at a time.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 60 lbs.
  • Knowledge of good departmental and company safety, housekeeping and PPE practices.
  • Understands departmental procedures and policies.
  • Ability to work with senior management and office staff.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Willing to work overtime and weekends as needed.

Education & Experience

  • Associate Degree from two-year college or technical school and/or Flexographic Package and Label Printing Certification, preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years related experience in Flexographic printing; or equivalent combination of education or experience.
